Pura Luhur Poten, Hindu Temple at Mt Bromo

After having a walk on narrow edge of Mt Bromo, I headed to Pura Luhur Poten.

Hindu Temple of Mount Bromo

Mt Bromo is considered very sacred by Tenggerese Hindu people. Word Bromo is derived from name of Hindu God Lord Brahma. There is a Hindu temple located at the base of volcano called “The Poten”. Temple is made of black rocks from volcanic eruptions. Bali and Tengger Hindu people visit the temple and make offerings. Especially on The Yadnya Kasada festival, when Bali and Tenggerese Hindu people climb the crater and make offerings to the volcano by throwing fruits, vegetables, money and even livestock inside the crater. The ceremony is to honour Ida Sang HyangWidi Wasa, along with the Trimurti gods, Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. Local people are known to go inside the crater to catch or pick up the sacrificed goods/livestock, which is considered to be the Prasad.

We bought couple of souvenir T- Shirts from local vendors sitting outside temple. We had atleast one common topic to talk about, Shahrukh Khan. Local people are a big fan of Shahrukh Khan and his movies. It appears almost everyone has seen Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and DDLJ. These people even remembered the movie songs. I promised my guide to bring him DVD of SRK movies when I meet him next.
